One day in 1976, Professor Muhammad Yunus avisit a poor village near Chittagong University. He bmeet a poor woman who made bamboo stools for a living. Although she cwork hard, she dremain poor because she eforce to pay a high price for the bamboo. She did not have enough money fbuy the bamboo and used to gtake loans from the moneylenders on an exorbitant interest. Professor Yunus hknow that he could not simply igive her the money she needed because it jrob the woman of her dignity. Instead, he kask the people in the village how much money they lneed to start their own business and free themselves from poverty. He mlend the equivalent of about US$27.00 from his pocket to 42 women of the village. Those women nset up their small business and started to earn money to support their families.
